Apart from walking down the canal to Brentford you can also cross the railway goods line (at pucker crossing points of course)! and climb the embankment on to the raised field to the west of the canal. This field is elevated as it was used to dump soil excavated when the canal was dug in the 18th century. The field was used for horses until recently when the landlord moved them on to the nearby Warren Farm site. To the South of the field you will see the M4 motorway carrying its load in and out of London, but in the gap between the field and the motorway you will see a mass of trees which signal another delight which is Long Wood (more of which later).
If all of this exploration makes you crave a pint or two, then pop in to the Fox pub which is situated just off the canal at the bottom of the Hanwell Flight. The Fox which is located on Green Lane, Hanwell opposite some pretty allotments and is a nice place to relax and the food is pretty good too (I like the nut roast)!
Directions......Nearest tube is Boston Manor Piccadilly Line, then either walk or get the E8 or 195 bus towards Ealing and get off at the bus stop after Wickes, walk toward the Dolphin pub in the direction of the departing bus, turn left down Green Lane and walk all the way down past the Fox pub and Bob's your proverbial Uncle.
