PG WS1

The Phoenix Garden was one of seven such spaces in the Covent Garden area. Community Gardens created on bomb sites left behind from the London Blitz. The Phoenix is the only survivor of the original gardens which were all gobbled up by developers over the years. Up until 1983 the site of the Garden was used as a car park and in 1984 taken over by community groups to be used as an open space and refuge from the surrounding bedlam of Soho and Covent Garden.
I would have loved that the other Gardens had survived so I could have seen 'The Italian Garden' and 'Chess Garden' for myself but alas it was not to be. But Phoenix is here and is bloody marvelous!
