Strolling the Lee 6

Below are some pics I took on my visit to the Pumping station. I was lucky as the Beam Engine (below left) was working on the day of my visit and the chap in the top hat as seen in the picture was giving a very informative talk about the site; including the fact that an outbreak of Cholera (I believe?) was transferred down the River Lee from the Tottenham area killing some 4000 Eastenders prior to the sewage works opening, does this explain the dislike between West Ham and Spurs to some extent I wonder?

LV Pump station ruins

These pics show the remains of the sewage treatment beds and the Beam Engine (built in 1886) plus a couple of the volunteers who look after the machinery. For more details check out The Markfield Pumping Station site
